Individual and Group Counseling
Individual counseling offers residents an opportunity to discuss problems
with a licensed social worker, and gain insight into her concerns. Discussion is often supplemented with hands on activities that demonstrate practical life lessons and coping skills. Discussions and activities are researched based and account for age, developmental levels, and specific issues of parenting adolescents. Individual sessions are designed to compliment the Individualized Service Plan (ISP) developed within thirty days of intake by the Program Manager/Social Worker. While the ISP is individualized, coping skills/emotional management, parenting skills, academic achievement, and occupational/vocational enhancement are standard areas addressed in each plan. Other common areas addressed in individual counseling include social skills, separation and abandonment, depression, school adjustment, anger management, family adjustment, behavioral concerns,learning disabilities, coping with violence, trauma, and abuse and neglect.
Group Counseling provides help in individual and interpersonal adjustment
through discussion and activities with adolescent peers who share similar
experiences and goals. Group members must agree to keep group discussions and activities confidential. Through group counseling, residents learn that they are not alone, and are encouraged to use the group as an outlet for their concerns. They learn and grow by their own contributions, and sharing their own experiences. In addition, the contributions of other group members are just as important in fostering growth. Groups members find relief in knowing there are others dealing with similar issues. They have opportunities to give and receive feedback in a supportive manner and environment, to learn more about their particular parenting concerns, and improve coping abilities, and to practice new and improved ways of relating to others including their child.
